Tony Covington has dedicated his career to public service, criminal justice and community leadership throughout the State of Maryland.
Since taking office as Charles County State’s Attorney in 2011, Tony has remained committed to public safety, victim advocacy and serving the residents of Charles County with integrity and professionalism.
Tony Covington grew up in Anne Arundel County, Maryland and graduated from Arundel High School in 1979.
He attended South Carolina State College (now South Carolina State University), graduating in 1983 at the top of his class. During his time there, he received recognition from numerous organizations, including:
Tony was also honored as a Distinguished Military Graduate through the United States Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC), following in the footsteps of his father, who earned the same distinction upon graduating from Morgan State University.
While attending South Carolina State College, Tony met his wife, Leatriz Dellahoussaye. The two married in 1984 and are the proud parents of twins, Tony Jr. and Domonique Michelle Covington.
After graduating in 1983, Tony accepted his commission as an officer in the United States Air Force.
He served on active duty for eight years as a decorated Intelligence Officer while simultaneously earning his law degree from the American University Washington College of Law in Washington, D.C.
Tony voluntarily separated from the Air Force in 1991 to pursue his legal career and continue his commitment to public service.
Following his military service, Tony was sworn in as an Assistant State’s Attorney in Prince George’s County, Maryland.
After approximately 18 months, he joined the State’s Attorney’s Office for Charles County, where he prosecuted a wide range of criminal cases until 1997.
Tony later entered private practice, litigating cases throughout Maryland and in multiple jurisdictions across the country, including:
In 2003, Tony returned to the State’s Attorney’s Office for Charles County as Deputy State’s Attorney.
He served in that role until January 2011, prosecuting many of the county’s most serious and high-profile criminal cases.
In 2010, following his predecessor’s retirement, Tony was elected State’s Attorney for Charles County.
On January 3, 2011, he became the first African American State’s Attorney in Charles County history.
